SAMUEL WELTY’S DESCENDANTS
BY KAREN HANSEN
In the April 2017 ACR, I wrote about our obtaining a gravestone for Civil War veteran Samuel H. Welty. Looking for descendants of Samuel, I found the children of his son Frank and his wife, Anna Welty.
1. Olive Pearl Welty was born on August 6, 1884 in Omaha and died on January 8, 1989 in San Diego, California. She was married to Edward G. Birch. They were in Pueblo, Colorado in 1910 and in California in 1920, 1930 and 1940. They had a daughter, Gladys Pearl Birch, born on April 4, 1905. She was living with her parents in Sacramento in 1930; she was 25 and divorced. In the 1940 Census, Gladys was married to Albert Kenneth Wollenberg, living in Sacramento. With them were sons, Kenneth George, 8, born November 1, 1931 and David Albert, 4, born May 18, 1935 and step-son, Edward Branat [Brandt?], 12. Gladys Wollenberg died on November 22, 1983 in Sacramento and is buried in Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chimes there. Gladys’ son David died on July 21, 1976.
2. Gladys May Welty, 27, married Edward E. Brandt, 31, on November 17, 1915 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They were in Omaha in 1920; in Santa Ana in 1930 and in Redlands, California in 1940. I have not found any children for Gladys May.
3. Samuel Herbert Welty, son of Frank, was born on December 27, 1890. In 1930 he was married to Elizabeth; they had son Herbert, 12. We visited the graves of Frank and Anna Welty and of their son, Samuel, and Elizabeth in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Omaha, Nebraska.
Although I was unable to find any direct descendants of our Civil War vet Samuel H. Welty, I did find three great-great-granddaughters of Frances Bowman Constable, who was married to Samuel H. Welty. I was able to show the gravestone to Linda Hanie, one of these 3 sisters, when she visited here recently.
