[JACKSON CARTER]
We have an obituary for Jackson Carter that says he was buried here in the Layton Township Cemetery, but we did not know the location of his grave. “Jackson Howard Carter was born at Floyd Court House, Virginia, May 11th, 1888 and departed this life at Council Bluffs, Iowa; September 20th 1921 at the age of 33 years, 4 months and 9 days.
He was united in marriage to Pearl M. Dreyer at Mora, Minnesota, on April 19th, 1918.
He served his country three years in time of peace in the National Guards at Columbus, Ohio, and for six months in the Engineers Corps during the recent World War, receiving an honorable discharge as a Sergeant.
He was baptized and united with the Christian church in Virginia. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. belonging to Council Bluffs Lodge No. 49 and also a member of the Knights and Ladies of Security at Des Moines.
He leaves to mourn his sudden departure his loving wife, two sons, two brothers and eight sisters, besides a host of friends. [Ed Note: Jackson Carter did not have any children. His wife had a son, Lawrence Dreyer, with her first husband.]
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. R. V. Felt, were held at the M. E. church in Walnut, on Saturday afternoon, September 24th, at 2:30 o’clock. Interment in the Walnut cemetery.” (The Daily Nonpareil, Friday, September 23, 1921, p. 1)
On the same page of the newspaper was the large heading “DEATH OF CARTER WAS AN ACCIDENT” and a long article. “After hearing evidence in the case involving the death of Jackson Carter, lineman for the Council Bluffs Gas & Electric company, who was electrocuted by a live wire while making repairs at the intersection of North Sixth and Seventh streets on the evening of September 20, a coroner’s jury Friday morning gave the verdict that Carter came to his death by accidentally picking up a live wire.”
We found that Mrs. Pearl Carter had purchased the S ½ of lot 2 in block 21 at the Layton Township Cemetery on Nov. 10, 1921, so we discovered the location of Jackson Carter’s burial. The N ½ of that lot was purchased by Pearl’s father, Benjamin F. Vaughn, in 1921. Buried with him are his wife, Nannie Vaughn and her mother, Sarah Evans. Those on the south half of the lot are Dora Dreyer, grandbaby of Pearl, and Alfred Vaughn, uncle of Pearl.
We ordered and have received a gravestone for Jackson Carter through the Veterans Administration. It will be placed on the lot that his wife purchased.
[JAMES MCLOUD]
We have been searching for the burial place of James McLoud at the request of Matthew Sampson. James McLoud died in 1944 in the Battle of the Bulge in Luxembourg. We have not found that his body was returned to the United States. More info to come in next ACR.
