DEATH OF FRED NAGEL.

Passed Away at Home in This City Last Thursday Evening.

Fred Nagel, son of Ludwig and Caroline Nagel, was born in Pommern, Germany, on July 22, 1858 and passed away at his late home in Walnut on October 16, 1924 at the age of 66 years, 2 months and 24 days.

He was christened and confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran faith at the age of 15. He emigrated to America at the age of 23 years, and became a naturalized citizen in 1886.

He was united in marriage to Miss Emilie Hapke at Atlantic on May 30, 1885. Five children were born to this union, four daughters and one son. The children are: Mrs. Clara Eilts of Wiota; Miss Viola Nagel, of Omaha; Miss Bertha Nagel, at home; William Nagel, of Missoula, Montana. One daughter, Milly, died in infancy.

He lived in Atlantic for five years. In 1887 he moved to Marne, where he conducted a shoe store until 1900, when he moved to Walnut, where he continued in the shoe business until 1916, since which time he has been engaged in the dairy business.

Mr. Nagel was an active church member for many years, and elder of the church until he was compelled to resign on account of failing health.

He was a charter member of the Woodman of the World lodge, Hickory Camp No. 82, Marne, Iowa.

For eight months Mr. Nagel was a patient sufferer of conser [cancer?], which with complications caused his death on Thursday, October 16, 1924.

Besides his wife and children, he leaves to mourn his death two brothers and two sisters, Frank Nagel of Enunclaw, Wash.; Louis Nagel of Matoon [Mattoon], Wis.; Mrs. William Mehlberg of Hunting, Wis., and Mrs. William Hapke of Wahoo, Nebr. The sisters have been at his bedside for the past two weeks, helping to care for him.

Funeral services were held at the Evangelical Lutheran church Sunday afternoon, October 19, at 1:30 o’clock. Rev. Hensel of Shelby officiated and interment made in the Brighton township cemetery at Marne. The Walnut Camp No. 32 W. O. W. had charge of the services at the grave.
