JOSEPH GUMP FAMILY ADDITIONS

Following my article in the October 2013 ACR, I found more information. The death date of Joseph D. Gump may not have been July 31, 1889 as found in the Avoca, Iowa burial permit. The following three newspaper articles may help: “All members of South Omaha Lodge No. 148, I. O. O. F., are requested to meet at the lodge rooms Thursday morning at 7 o’clock to accompany the remains of your late brother, Joseph D. Gump, to the depot.” (The Omaha Daily Bee, Aug. 1, 1889)
“The remains of Joseph Gump were attended to the train this morning by the Odd Fellows. Messrs, H. Heyman, James Carlin, J. T. Dean, Z. Cuddington, Ziba Crawford and J. H. Wallwork accompanied the remains to Avoca.” (Omaha World-Herald, Aug. 1, 1889)
“Joe Gump a former resident of Avoca died in South Omaha Sunday. He was buried in Avoca yesterday.” (Walnut Bureau, Fri., Aug. 2, 1889) If Joseph died on Sunday, it was July 28, 1889.
A second Gump family update is in regard to the name change of Roy Gump to Roy Sweny. “Roy Gump has filed a petition asking the district court to change his name to Roy Sweny. He is an orphan and was brought up by an aunt named Sweny and is best known by that name.” (The Omaha Daily Bee, Sept. 22, 1903, p. 7)
