VISITORS AND QUERIES
BY KAREN HANSEN
In July, while we were out of town, Austin Whitmon of Mantachie, Mississippi visited the genealogy room, looking for information on Dora, August, Pete, Jacob and Johanna DIEDRICKSEN and was assisted by Erika Lees. I called him and asked if he found what he wanted and if he knew the SCHLICHTS who lived in that area of MS. Surprisingly, Austin’s great-aunt married one of my Schlicht relatives. We have shared Schlicht information and I have found where Jacob, Peter and August Diedricksen lived in Walnut and also send him many family obituaries.
Another visitor also interested in Peter, Clara and Viola DIEDRICKSEN was Rosa M. Clemsen from Exira.
I especially enjoyed helping, Christine and Eddie Adams, who came all the way from the United Kingdom to visit Caddock relatives and to look for information on Earl CADDOCK and his family. Christine also shared her Caddock family photo with us.
We received an email from Kerry GREVE BUTZ of Spokane, Washington looking for information on her grandfather Hermann Ludwig GREVE. Her father had a picture of the steamship Bremen, which Hermann had taken from Holstein, Germany to New York in 1931. She found the passenger list of the ship, which showed he was 27 and German and Henry Greve, who was with him, was 25 and his nationality was USA. Hermann had 12 brothers and sisters, so Henry could be one of the brothers. Their destination was Walnut, Iowa.
Hermann had also traveled from his home in Ascheffel, Holstein to Walnut, Iowa in July of 1926 when he was 22. I found Herman L. Greve in the 1930 Monroe Township, Shelby County, Iowa Census. He was 26, a laborer for Herman F. and Emma Steffen. In the 1940 Census, Herman was a hired hand for Martin P. and Dorothea Jacobsen in Loleta Judicial Township, Humboldt County, California. This is reasonable as Kerry said that he married in California in 1954 and his wife was 30 years younger than he was. If anyone has more information about Hermann’s time here, please let me know.
