The Walnut Genealogy Society celebrated their 10-year anniversary on Thursday, March 8, 2007. A soup and sandwich supper was held at 6 p.m. at the Walnut Public Library. Eighteen members were present to share in the meal, complete with a beautiful anniversary cake from Roberts Bakery.
Charter members of the organization were Bob & Deloris Allen, Ruby Andersen, Vern & Linda Booth, Julia Bryan, Ray & Mabel Buboltz, John & Barb Butcher, Audrey Carroll, Jean Corey, Odessa Drake, Bob & Lucille Goeken, Jim & Karen Hansen, Wilber & Ioma Hubbard, Pastor Paul & Teresa Hutchins, Letty Johnson, Berniece Juhl, Bob & Mariann Martens, Marjorie McDermott, George & Marlayne McNary, Margaret Murphy, Ann Paasch, Carol Parman, Marietta Petersen, Carol Sampson, Sharon Snipes, Leo & Gayle Stuart, Louie & Lois Troll, and Ethel I. Voss.
President Gayle Stuart showed our new resource book, The Handybook for Genealogists. We are thankful to the Walnut Creek Questers for their donation toward the purchase of this book. Gayle also asked those present about projects that we want to complete in the future. Ruby Andersen and Don Walter are working on the history of the businesses in Walnut. We want to collect advertising of doctors, dentists, veterinarians, drugstores and funeral homes and look for information on the families. We would also like to collect the history of the houses in Walnut. Mabel Buboltz has been working on this project. We ordered a microfilm of town lot sales that we hope will help. We have received a copy of the 1914 Sanborn fire insurance map of Walnut. We have the 1980-1988 Walnut Bureau newspapers in bound volumes, but would like to get them microfilmed. Barb Butcher and Karen Hansen will publish information on people who are buried in the Lincoln Township Cemetery. The outhouse at the Layton Township Cemetery needs to be restored, but may need to be a community project. Marietta Petersen brought approximately 80 funeral cards to add to our obituary information. Our resources catalog has been put on a CD.
