Wanderings From Your President

WANDERINGS FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

by Gayle Stuart

When we get older and are retired, things are supposed to slow down.  That has not been the case this spring and summer.

Have you ever tried to go thru a file drawer?  Why did we save all that stuff?  Now we have to look at all of it to see if it needs to be saved.  We also find things we forgot we kept for some reason.  Now what do we do with it?

We went on a bus tour of Kansas in June.  They took us into the caves in Kansas City, where there are shops and businesses. Lots of streets are set up underground.  Then, we saw the Arabia Steamboat Museum.  Then, we visited a candlemaker, where we could dip our own candle.

The next morning, we went to the Great Overland Station where we had breakfast served by the Harvey Girls.  The train museum was very interesting.

Evel Knievel Museum was next and then Midwest Dream Car Collection. If you are Swedish, Lindsborg is the place to go.  We had a buffet for lunch of Swedish dishes.  The Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene was interesting to visit.

Strataca Salt Mine in Hutchinson, Kansas is about 650 feet below ground.  This is where the salt comes from to use on our highways in the winter.

The National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri is very good.   We saw a Stuart cousin from Lexington waiting in line for admittance.

The first weekend in July, we went to Oklahoma for another Stuart cousin’s birthday get- together.  The family from which he descends settled south of Walnut on the farm where Bob Gross lives (50507 Sumac Road).  The first Catholic Cemetery was on this farm before being moved to the western part of Walnut.
